Before I begin, I sometimes like to set the mood a little. You might choose to play some calming music — or whatever kind of music helps you relax and focus. Sometimes I’ll also light a candle or place a small object nearby that feels meaningful. It could be something simple like a stone, a crystal, or a small figure.
For me, I often place my little Buddha and a candle on the desk.
These small things can shift the energy of the moment and create a little space where you can step away from the busyness of the day and focus on something simple.
Then I begin drawing lines.
Nothing complicated. Just letting the pen move across the page. One line becomes another, and then another. Sometimes they curve, sometimes they intersect, sometimes they simply repeat.
Something interesting happens when we do this. Our attention slowly shifts from the thoughts running through our mind to the movement of the pen. The breathing slows down, and the mind begins to settle.
Line drawing reminds us that we don’t have to figure everything out all at once. Just like a drawing, things can unfold one line at a time.
If you’d like to try this today, take a blank page and slowly draw a few lines. Let them connect or wander — there’s no right or wrong way to do it.
Reflection question:
What happens in your mind when you allow yourself to focus on just the next line instead of the whole picture?
